Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, the main work in this concert, was described by the composer as a ‘human requiem’ of mourning and consolation for the living. The German text was chosen by Brahms from the Lutheran Bible. The work was the composer’s response to the death of his mother and perhaps also to the death some years earlier of his great friend and mentor, Schumann. The music ranges from sad and reflective to triumphant.
